Artem Eydelman, 29, was charged with murder and is being detained in Pinellas County Jail
The man identified as Artem Eydelman, 29, allegedly left baby Gwendolyn with brain and rib fractures “consistent with his admission that he had squeezed her abdomen”, according to cops.
Though the 29-year-old was not the infant’s biological father, he signed his name as Gwendolyn’s father on her birth certificate.
He is said to have been caring for the little girl but “didn’t want to change her nappy” while her mum was away at work.
Eydelman, from Florida, claimed to deputies from Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office that he fed Gwendolyn, then put her down in a bassinet before falling asleep.
He said he then fell asleep in his bed and about 15 minutes later, returned to the bassinet to find the infant unresponsive and not breathing, according to the sheriff’s office.
After “several inconsistencies” with Eydelman’s statement to deputies, detectives said they later learned he hit the child in the head and squeezed her midsection before Gwendolyn lost consciousness, reported Miami Herald.
Gwendolyn was removed from life support and succumbed to her injuries on November 19, according to the sheriff’s office.
Eydelman was arrested and faces one count of murder and was charged with violating his probation.
The baby’s mother Mariah Samon has since paid tribute to her daughter on Facebook – and said she had no idea of Eydelman’s alleged violent streak, according to Metro.
She wrote: “How can you know when he was nothing but kind and gentle to Gwen in front of me and the abuse happened 1 time in a fit of rage while I was at work.
“I just checked on her during my lunch break that day, not even 2 hours before it happened & Artem said they were at the park and she was being so good for him.
“Also I’m moving this week because I can’t even bare to go up to my own bedroom, knowing that Artem confessed to that being where the abuse happened.
“I don’t want to use my own bathroom, because I think of giving Gwen baths and it was her favourite time.”
Eydelman is currently being detained in Pinellas County Jail while the investigation continues.
