SSNIT launches Seventh Customer Service Mobile Clinic

Accra, Sept. 24, GNA – The Social Security and
National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it is reinventing its operations to be
more customer-centric, in a bid to get more people to understand the importance
of social security benefits.

Mrs Laurette Korkor Otchere Esq., the Deputy
Director-General in charge of Benefits and Operations, said SSNIT was working
to ensure that 100 per cent of workers in the formal sector were enrolled onto
the Scheme.

Citing the 2015 Labour Force Report by the
Ghana Statistical Service, she said the formal sector consisted 20 per cent of
the total working population; 1.85 million, out of which about 1.47 million
were registered on the SSNIT Scheme.

“This means that there are more formal sector
workers to be covered…Indeed as a Trust, we must find ingenious ways of
ensuring that all workers, including those in the informal sector, get social
security coverage. Social security is a human right and every worker is
entitled to a safe, secure and dependable retirement,” she said.

Mrs Otchere made the statement when she
launched the Seventh SSNIT Customer Service Mobile Clinic (CSMC) in Accra on

She said the CSMC would not only help to expand
coverage of the National Pension Scheme among workers who were not covered but
also send a message to its stakeholders that customer satisfaction was very
important to the Trust.

“By organising the customer service mobile
clinic, we will be raising awareness of the importance of social security
benefits where workers can no longer work,” she said.

She explained that the Trust had reconstituted
its customer experience department to intensify engagement with the public,
leading to a significant improvement in the processing time for pension
applications since January 2018.

“For example, in August, we processed the
highest of new pensions application so far this year, about 2,921 applications,
with a reduction in average processing days of 19 days,” she stated, adding
that reduction in processing time would ensure that pensioners did experience
gaps in their flow of income.

She noted that the Trust was also
collaborating with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to find
ways of bringing informal sector workers onto the SSNIT Scheme, but noted that
self-employed workers could register as voluntary contributors on the Tier 1

She said while the Trust had a responsibility
of managing contributions well, contributors also had a part to play by knowing
their rights and responsibilities as members of the Scheme.

“We, therefore, reiterate that every
contributor should always seek and find knowledge about their status with the
SSNIT Scheme,” she said, and urged them to take advantage of the avenues
provided such as the CSMC, contact centre, branch offices, social media and the
web portal of the SSNIT.

CSMC will be open from today to Friday, September 28, at various locations in
the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Brong Ahafo and Northern regions.
