Representatives of GBA present award to Atuguba

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has honoured retired Supreme Court Judge, William Atuguba, for contributing immensely to the strengthening of “the democratic enterprise under the 1992 Constitution.”

Enrolled to the Bar on October 3, 1974, Justice Atuguba worked as a private legal practitioner and subsequently as a state attorney and prosecutor. In November 1995, he was identified among many practicing lawyers in the country and elevated to the Supreme Court of Ghana.

“As a Judge, you distinguished yourself. You discharged your duties with dedication, honesty, and a sense of justice. You have through your various decisions, contributed immensely to the strengthening of the democratic enterprise under the 1992 Constitution.”

“You delivered several landmark judgments which were always embedded with Latin Maxims and Shakespearean words, and which helped to expand the frontiers of the law.”

“Your judgments have been a powerful source of reference for the Bar and Bench and your contribution to the strengthening of our democratic system is beyond dispute.”

“You served the judiciary and Ghana on numerous committees in multiple capacities which enabled the progression of the legal profession and provided long-standing contributions in furthering the scope of judicial and legal education institutions.”

“On several occasions, you acted as chief justice. You were for a period the longest serving justice of the Supreme Court until your retirement on 11 July, 2018.”

“Mr. Justice William Anaam Atuguba, on the occasion of your retirement from the judiciary after 23 years of distinguished and dedicated service to Ghana, and the legal profession the Ghana bar association assembled at its 2018-2019 annual conference in Koforidua in the eastern region of the republic of Ghana hereby confers on you the meritorious honour of outstanding performance, commitment to the cause of justice and patriotism in your judicial career as a judge,” the president of the GBA Benson Nutsukpui said.
